Guardian Home Program Basics

In order to give OUR breeding dogs the very best life possible,  it was important to limit how many dogs we personally kept and housed BUT also we understood in order to breed the highest quality dogs which is our MAIN GOAL, we also needed to keep, evaluate, and ADD quality bloodlines to our breeding program.

So, how was all of this going to be possible?

For us and many breeders like us the answer is The Guardian Program.

Our Guardian Dog program has allowed us to expand our dog breeding program with pride and helped us to breed the very highest quality Boerboels puppies the right way..

As a Guardian home, you get a puppy at little to no up front cost to you and your guardian dogs stays with you as your family member for their entire life and we just retain breeding rights for a certain amount of litters starting at sexual maturity and ending once the female has whelped a set amount of litters.. each guardian dog contract is unique, but it’s usually between 1 to 4 litters during her career and depending on what we’re trying to accomplish with that particular female/male and how well she reacts to being a Mother.

Not all girls actually turn out to be well suited for motherhood and in those rare cases we will retire them after only one litter. Also, some dogs may not pass all their genetic testing which in those cases they would also be retired before ever being bred. Full legal ownership would be signed over to the guardian and the guadian contract would be over at that point.

GUARDIAN RESPONSIBILITY

Our guardians are responsible for the dog’s regular health maintenance: annual exams, vaccines, food, etc. We pay for genetic health testing required for breeding, and all breeding related expenses. Once the dog has passed their genetic health testing she/he is added to our breeding program. We decide when she will be bred and to whom she will be bred too, she stays with her guardian family during her pregnancy (63 days) and then is returned to us at least a 1-2 weeks before her due date to deliver (whelp) and then raise her puppies (8 weeks). Once her puppies are weaned then she’s returned to her guardian family.

When the dog is older and completes his/her breeding obligations, she/he is spayed/neutered and your dog comes home to enjoy the wonderful life you have provided for him/her since puppyhood. Females in guardian homes may have up to four litters (minimum of three) prior to being spayed, usually by their 5th birthday.

There are many things that Guardian families need to consider. Guardians of females sometimes have to deal with several heat cycles and must keep their girl protected from unwanted males.

The Guardian family will need to learn the signs of a heat cycle and be willing to communicate, cooperate and coordinate with us to ensure a successful breeding.

Because of canine venereal diseases,  male guardian dogs can only mate with our approved females.

Looking for Local Northwest Families..

We’re looking for local families with dog experience who live in Snohomish County and surrounding areas.

We only add one or two puppies a year to our breeding program.

Qualifying to be a Guardian Home:

• Guardians must have previous dog experience
• Guardians must own and live in a home with a fully fenced yard.  Home owners are preferred because we don’t want to worry about moving around or “no pets allowed” from future  landlords.
• Guardians must keep the dog on a leash or in a fenced area when unsupervised (unless acreage).
• Guardians must be willing to train the dog the basic obedience commands (off, down, sit, back, leave it, crate) and potty training is a MUST.
• Guardians must ensure their Guardian puppy is well socialized with adults, children and other animals starting at an early age and through out their lifetime  – They must not be stranger shy or have anxiety issues while away from their owners. All these things can be avoided with extensive and early socialization. 
• Guardians must provide appropriate veterinary or emergency care when needed.
• Guardians must feed the dog a diet approved by the breeder which would be any of the high-end dog food brands available at your local feed store, Costco or pet store. No grocery store brands.
• Guardians must be able and willing to identify and notify us immediately when a female begins her heat cycle.
• Guardians must NEVER allow their female while in heat around sexually intact males (un-neutered males).
• Guardians must not allow a male guardian to breed with unapproved females.
• Guardians must live within a reasonable driving distance from Lake Stevens, WA.
• Guardians MUST communicate, cooperate and coordinate with the breeder regarding testing, mating, whelping, and other breeding related activities.

In closing…

The Guardian Home program is actually a very simple and rewarding program even though it may seem like there’s a lot of details… being a guardian dog owner is meant to be a rich and fulfilling experience for everyone involved and designed to keep our breeding dogs healthy and happy, but also our guardian families.

It’s a great opportunity to not only own an amazing dog but you eventually also get to watch how your dogs puppies have enriched and changed their families lives.  We post all our family updates on our Facebook page. 

We also provide weekly updates to our guardian families while your guardian dog is here with us. Pictures and videos of how their doing and also of their puppies. We try to involve our guardians in the excitement of the new litter as much as possible.

If we as humans truly reject the idea of puppy mills, then to my knowledge there is no better way than the guardian home program to help reputable breeders like us continue to breed dogs in a humane and loving environment and out of cages so in order to continue to produce HAPPY and HEALTHY puppies for families who are looking for a forever pet or are in need of a service dog we have adopted this wonderful program and it has worked very well for us and the families involved.
